When I visited Grimey's for the first time in 2010, it was a very exciting store for me. Why? A great selection of new CDs. Many Japanese imports are indicative of a healthy environment for me to shop in. Best of all, the used 7" singles were chock full of material of great interest to me. Lots of late 70s-early 80s UK 7" material priced right.

On my second visit six years later, the store had undergone significant changes. All used product was next door at "Grimey's Too." The main store only had new product and CD coverage on the floor was dramatically scaled back in favor of new vinyl, which is uninteresting to me. I buy a lot of records and I am strictly interested in music which has never made the leap to digital formats. Modern vinyl is only of interest to me if the release is vinyl only. To that end I did buy a Third Man Records pressing of the Dex Romweber Duo live. It was very fairly priced at $9.98, but that was the only title in the store of any interest.

When I went to the used store next door, the CDs were arranged in an awkward fashion that made browsing difficult. Most of the discs were on shelves facing outward, necessitating a flip through approach that was slow. The used LPs were all tired mainstream 70s rock, mostly. If that's not your interest, look elsewhere. Worst of all, the 7" bins were now 90% modern 45 releases from the last 20 years - of no interest to me at all. There were two almost empty bins of older material. The stock that was so exciting to me six years earlier has been sold off and not replenished. Part of Grimey's Too was a bookstore, of no interest to me. I don't think I'll make it a point of visiting Grimey's again when in Nashville unless I'm really bored and happen to drive by. My limited time and money may be better served by a trip to Phonoluxe instead. Your mileage may vary.
